# Working in Germany with a Bulgarian Passport: 2026 Guide
**Someone with a Bulgarian passport can live and work in Germany without a visa or work permit. Bulgaria has been a member of the European Union since 2007, and Bulgarian citizens have had full access to the German labour market since 1 January 2014. After moving to Germany, the main tasks are address registration within two weeks, a tax identification number and health insurance. You can also keep your Turkish citizenship, because Bulgaria allows dual citizenship.**

In this article we explain what a Bulgarian passport gives you in Germany, which steps to follow after you move, and the ways you can obtain the passport.

## What does a Bulgarian passport give you in Germany?

A Bulgarian citizen lives and works in Germany with largely the same rights as a German citizen. The EU rules on free movement of persons guarantee this.

| Topic | With a Turkish passport | With a Bulgarian passport |
|---|---|---|
| Entering Germany | Visa required | No visa required |
| Working | Residence with a work permit is required | No permit needed, you can work from day one |
| Job seeking | A job-seeker visa is subject to conditions | You can come freely and look for work |
| Starting a business | A separate residence permit is required | Freelancing and setting up a company are free |
| Family | Family reunification conditions apply | They come as family members of an EU citizen |

These rights apply not only in Germany but in all EU countries. You can find which countries you can visit without a visa in our article [which countries can Bulgarian citizens travel to](/en/which-countries-can-bulgarian-citizens-travel-to/).

## Is a work permit required?

No. Bulgarian citizens have worked in Germany without a work permit since 1 January 2014. The employer hires you like a German citizen and does not file a permit application on your behalf. This is the biggest difference for Turkish citizens: with a Turkish passport, working in Germany depends in most cases on the approval of the employer and the migration authorities.

In **regulated professions** such as medicine, nursing and teaching, however, your diploma must be recognised in Germany (Anerkennung). This requirement relates to the profession, not to citizenship; foreign diplomas are also assessed for German citizens.

## Step by step after moving to Germany

1. **Address registration (Anmeldung):** After moving into a home, you register your address at the municipal citizens' office (Bürgeramt) within two weeks. A rental contract and the landlord's confirmation of move-in (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) are requested.
2. **Tax identification number (Steuer-ID):** It is sent by post after address registration. Your employer asks for this number for payroll.
3. **Health insurance:** Health insurance is mandatory in Germany. When you start a job, you usually join the statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung).
4. **Bank account:** A German or EU bank account is opened so your salary can be paid.
5. **Social security number:** It is issued through your health insurer or the pension institution.

None of these steps requires a residence permit or work permit. Your Bulgarian passport or Bulgarian ID card is enough to prove your identity.

## Can your family come too?

Yes. Your spouse and children can live with you in Germany as **family members of an EU citizen**, even if they are Turkish citizens. For this they apply for the residence card issued to family members of EU citizens (Aufenthaltskarte). This card is much more flexible than the classic family reunification conditions applied to Turkish citizens.

Often an even better route is for family members to become Bulgarian citizens as well. Children of a Bulgarian citizen are citizens by birth; it is enough to report the birth to Bulgaria. Details: [Bulgarian citizenship for a child through birth notification](/en/birth-registration-bulgarian-citizenship-for-children/) and [can I get Bulgarian citizenship through my spouse](/en/bulgarian-citizenship-through-a-spouse/).

## Settling permanently in Germany

EU citizens gain the **right of permanent residence** after living legally in Germany for 5 years without interruption. Germany has also allowed dual citizenship since 27 June 2024; the legal residence period required for German citizenship is generally 5 years. So someone who settles in Germany with a Bulgarian passport can later apply for German citizenship while keeping both Turkish and Bulgarian citizenship.

## Will I lose my Turkish citizenship?

No. Bulgaria allows dual citizenship; Türkiye also does not require permission to acquire Bulgarian citizenship, you only need to report the new citizenship to the Turkish population records. Your Turkish citizenship, your rights in Türkiye and your property remain as they are. For other advantages, see our article [advantages of Bulgarian dual citizenship](/en/advantages-of-bulgarian-dual-citizenship/).

## How do you get a Bulgarian passport?

A Bulgarian passport is the result of Bulgarian citizenship. The most common routes from Türkiye are:

| Your situation | Route to follow |
|---|---|
| You emigrated from Bulgaria in 1989 or later | No new application needed: birth certificate, inquiry, passport. [Guide for 89 emigrants](/en/bulgarian-citizenship-for-1989-emigrants/) |
| Your mother or father is a Bulgarian citizen | Birth notification or citizenship through a parent. [Bulgarian citizenship through my father](/en/bulgarian-citizenship-through-a-father/) |
| Your grandfather or grandmother was born in Bulgaria | Citizenship through Bulgarian origin. [Bulgarian citizenship through my grandfather](/en/bulgarian-citizenship-through-grandparents/) |
| Your spouse is a Bulgarian citizen | Citizenship through marriage. [Bulgarian citizenship through my spouse](/en/bulgarian-citizenship-through-a-spouse/) |

To find out which route suits you, you can read our article [who can get Bulgarian citizenship](/en/who-can-get-bulgarian-citizenship/) or go directly to our [citizenship services page](/en/services/citizenship/). The passport application after citizenship is explained in [how to get a Bulgarian passport](/en/how-to-get-a-bulgarian-passport/).

## Common mistakes

- Starting a job in Germany before the Bulgarian passport is issued. The citizenship decision alone is not enough; you need a valid Bulgarian passport or ID card that proves your identity.
- Delaying address registration by more than two weeks. The tax number and the bank account depend on this registration.
- Trying to work in a regulated profession without having your diploma recognised.
- Postponing the birth notification of children. Children who are not Bulgarian citizens need separate residence procedures.
